Alicante is a city in the southeast of Spain known for its good climate and its beaches. Of course, the city is not only characterised by these two aspects, but by many more. Another important point is the presence of many rustic villages that give the place a charm in which many people like to spend their holidays. In this article we will review some of the beautiful villages of Alicante and what makes them so charming.
Altea
Altea is undoubtedly one of the best known and most appreciated towns in Alicante. This beautiful village of Alicante is a balance between natural beauty and architectural beauty with its historic centre. The village has several hotels and restaurants offering a magnificent view of the ocean that will surely delight many. The old town is labyrinthine and offers secrets to those brave enough at heart to explore. From quirky nooks and crannies to beautiful views and unlikely stalls, you will soon feel rewarded for entering Daedalus’ labyrinth. Altea also has a beautiful square with a church, and who wouldn’t want to enter a church to discover the treasures it contains? Not far from there we can see the crest of the Sierra Helada and the rest of the surrounding mountains.
Calpe
One of Calpe’s attractions is undoubtedly the Peñon de Ifach, a magnificent rocky outcrop 332 metres above the town it watches over, the ascent to the silent white guardian is highly recommended! From the top, the panoramic view of the whole area is unrelenting. Don’t be discouraged, be brave, put on your best shoes and don’t give up half way up, because the reward is worth the effort. Calpe also has beautiful beaches that welcome divers. Speaking of divers, Calpe was originally a fishing village and remnants of this modest past can be found in many parts of Calpe, as well as the salt pans that the locals used to collect on the shore. Be sure to try the fish, which has become a local speciality, especially in the old port area.
Alcoy
Alcoy is another of the beautiful villages of Alicante, and one of the most medieval. Alcoy is a town that gives a lot of importance to fiestas and you can even find the Museo Alcoyano de la Fiesta where you can see festive costumes, photos or videos showing the fiestas in question, whether Christian or Muslim. There are also many period buildings, such as the church of Santa Maria, the medieval towers that formed part of the protective wall of the city at that time, and the Cervantes shelter, built during the civil war. Another very important spot in Alcoy is the Carrascal de la Fuente Roja Natural Park, located near the city. Here you will find what is left of the native forest of the Valencian Community. You can also go for a walk, and there are special trails for stretching your feet. It is therefore highly recommended to go and have a look.
Of course, there are many other villages around Alicante, but we really wanted to talk about a few that were close to our hearts, but if you can, don’t hesitate to visit other beautiful villages of Alicante besides the ones we have mentioned!
