Malaga is a city in the south of Spain in the region of Andalusia. It is a region of Spain that has a lot of Moorish influence and has many cultural monuments, it is also one of the oldest cities in Europe!

Charming places to visit in Malaga

First of all, I will tell you about the Alcazaba of Malaga, which is one of the most visited places in the area. Then I will tell you about the Hammam Al Ándalus, the Picasso Museum which is also the birthplace of the painter, the bullring of La Malagueta, and finally, the glass and crystal museum. With these 5 places, there is a lot to see in Malaga!

1. Alcazaba

The Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is a fortress on the slopes of Mount Gibralfaro built by the Hammudid dynasty on the remains of a Roman fortress in the 11th century. The fortress is separated into two enclosures: the entrance area and the upper enclosure. The upper enclosure contains a palace that was even used by some of the kings of Spain as a resting place after the reconquest. Next to the Alcazaba there was even a neighbourhood that had a system of latrines with a drainage system for the water used in almost all the houses, and that in the 11th century!

Tourists can take advantage of this ancient structure, which is still in very good condition, despite the passage of time. Here you can see what life was like in an era that now seems so remote… This is definitely one of the activities not to be missed in Malaga!

2. Hammam Al Ándalus in Malaga

What better place to experience Arab baths without having to go to a Muslim country than Malaga? As well as being good for the body, the Arabic atmosphere of the building gives it a fairytale feel. Like Ali Baba entering the cave of the 40 thieves, the architecture transports you to another country and its culture. Here you can bathe and relax in various baths that vary in temperature and also have a body massage.

Who wouldn’t want a relaxing session like this? Don’t you think that feeling like you are in another country and in another time is a very interesting activity to do in Malaga? I really think it is something that everyone should try at least once in their life.

3. Picasso Museum in Malaga

Everyone knows Picasso, or at least has seen one of his paintings. Although he spent many years in France, the painter is indeed a Spaniard. Born in 1881 in Malaga, this painter is considered a genius by his contemporaries. What better place to visit a museum dedicated to him than his own country and hometown?

In this museum, located in the city centre, you can admire many of Picasso’s paintings belonging to various artistic movements of which he was a part throughout his life. Of course, there are many paintings from Cubism (a movement of which Picasso was the leading figure), but also from Surrealism and Post-Impressionism. For all lovers of painting, this is an essential place to see in Malaga.

4. Bullring of La Malagueta

Whatever one thinks of bullfighting, a bullring is not only a place where bulls are fought and killed, but also a place with many cultural events. The arena, which is very reminiscent of a Roman amphitheatre, is in neo-Mudéjar style and has a hexadecagonal shape, i.e. with 16 sides.

Today it is possible to buy tickets to visit the stadium and see the entire inner part of the arena, which is not normally accessible to the public.

5. Malaga Glass and Crystal Museum

This museum, through the glass, tells the story of each artistic movement to which they belong, as well as that of their first owners. As well as having an impressive collection of glass, the collection is housed in a beautiful 16th century house that has been completely restored. In this museum we can find more than 3,000 crystals from different periods accompanied by period furniture so that visitors can fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period. Whether you are fascinated by glass or you are a history buff, this museum should interest you and make you have a great time – definitely one of the most interesting things to see in Malaga!
