The 5 best beaches in Gran Canaria

The 5 best beaches in Gran Canaria

Like the majority of the islands in the archipelago, Gran Canaria hides within it a large number of paradisiacal landscapes, among which the beaches stand out. In spite of having a diameter of only 60 km, Gran Canaria has an enormous coastline accessible for bathing almost in its entirety, which is why 13 of the 46 blue flags the archipelago has been awarded, this is no coincidence.

The best beaches in Gran Canaria. Where to go?

As I have already mentioned, Gran Canaria has many beaches due to its geographical character. It is difficult to choose or define some better than others because they all have a uniqueness. In addition to the quality of its beaches, it has a good climate all year round.

It is worth noting that there are beaches of all kinds, from beaches that have been invaded by hordes of tourists occupying hammocks to isolated beaches where you will feel like Tom Hanks in “Castaway”. Of all of them we would like to recommend the five best in our opinion.

1. Playa de Tufia

This old fishing village has become an enclave for those who want to escape from the large and crowded beaches of Gran Canaria. It is located in the municipality of Telde and its beach is out of reach of the masses. In addition, you can visit the archaeological zone of Tufia.

There are two beaches in the municipality of Tufia, one with golden sand located on the left hand side, also known as the beach of "Aguadulce”; and another with volcanic rock and black sand located on the right hand side which is the one we will talk about.

The Tufia beach with its crystal clear water and volcanic rock makes the lovers of scuba diving a perfect place to practice it, with its sandy bottom where you can see all kinds of native aquatic fauna and flora.

It is very pleasant to be there, to swim and admire its crystal-clear waters, but you have to be careful, because when the tide rises, all of it disappears.

2. Maspalomas Beach

If there is one beach in Gran Canaria that you must visit, it is Maspalomas, perhaps the most famous beach on the island and one of the best in the archipelago because of its beautiful dunes, which refer to the same name, the dunes of Maspalomas.

On this long beach there is room for everyone and everything, from the family areas, closer to the lighthouse, to the large nudist areas, to the area of “La Punta” where surfers can enjoy the waves in that area.

Being in the largest tourist area of the island you can find accommodation quickly and easily, all with a high level of quality, as is the case of this bungalow.

If you decide to take a walk on the beach, you will find the famous Playa del Inglés. It is almost three kilometres long and an average of 100 metres wide. Due to their tourist exploitation in recent decades, the dunes are in danger of disappearing as the construction of hotels right next to the ecosystem is slowing down their regeneration.

3. Playa de Amadores

If we continue our tour of the south of the island we find the Playa de Amadores. This magnificent beach of blond sand and turquoise waters is located in the municipality of Mogán where you can make an excursion to the port and its market.

There are several beaches in the south of Gran Canaria located in small bays. Of all of them, Amadores is the one with the largest extension, reaching 800 meters of sand, to which we must add the space on the seafront that is used for rental deckchairs. This one has stairs that allow to go down to the water without having to pass by the beach.

This is a perfect artificial beach to go to with children. The water is so calm that it is hard to believe that it is part of the Atlantic Ocean that is so rough on other beaches in the Canaries. It almost looks like a pool of crystalline water that looks turquoise in the distance.

Besides, it is sheltered from the trade winds, so you don’t have to look at the weather to know you will have a quiet day. The only disadvantage of this beach is that, due to its location, it is usually full of tourists. And as a tourist site that is, you have a wide range of accommodation for all tastes and budgets, among which we recommend this wonderful apartment.

4. Playa de Las Canteras

We cannot talk about the beaches of Gran Canaria without mentioning Playa de Las Canteras, the most famous urban beach in the capital. It has several kilometers of sand and crystalline and calm waters due to the natural protective barrier of volcanic lava, known as “la barra”. Perfect for young and old.

It’s a very known beach also for being able to practise in her diverse aquatic sports as the surf and the bodyboard. Las Canteras is surrounded by a promenade where there are restaurants, shops of all kinds and a lot of atmosphere at any time of the day, in its extension you can find from parks for children to basketball and football courts.

In the same beach of Las Canteras you can rest in this fantastic apartment with incredible sea views. This apartment has everything you need, so if you’re going with people, don’t hesitate to book it.

5. Playa de Güigüí

This is, without a doubt, the best kept secret in Gran Canaria and we put it at the end to try to continue preserving it. The beach is located within the area declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.

Luckily, it’s a totally virgin and lonely beach. So much so, that to reach it is only possible to do so by boat or on foot. We won’t deceive you, the road is a bit rough and you can take a little more than an hour and a half each way.

This beach of great beauty is located at the foot of a cliff and the 850 meters that has preserved this beach virtually intact and alien to the passage of time. It belongs to the municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás in the southwest of Gran Canaria, one of the least populated and tourist areas of the island.
