Where to Dive in Gran Canaria

Where to Dive in Gran Canaria

In Gran Canaria there are more and more locals and tourists who want to enjoy the seabed that surround the island.

Gran Canaria is located about 150 kilometers from the coast of Morocco and has a very diverse climate. The waters that bathe the island and the richness of its seabed make the diving areas in Gran Canaria a focus of attraction for many people who love this practice.

Why diving in Gran Canaria?

Due to the unique location of the archipelago, there is constantly a warm air which makes it possible to dive in Gran Canaria all year round. In addition, the islands are found in the warm ocean current, creating a permanent habitat for dolphins, turtles, whales and manta rays. Also

First, crystal clear water with a temperature ranging from 19°C  in winter to 24°C  in summer,  is suitable all year round for over- and underwater activities. On the rocky shore and reefs there is a great variety of underwater life that makes every dive a pleasant experience. For advanced divers it is also possible to dive on the deepest reefs and wrecks.

Where to dive in Gran Canaria?

Among the best known places to do these water activities are the beaches of Sardina and El Cabrón.

El Cabrón

The best area without a doubt is the Cabrón marine reserve in Arinaga, where you can find divers every day of the week. Here the entrance and exit to the sea is a bit difficult, but they are safe enough.

The life and visibility we can find in it will be worth every second of immersion. El Cabrón is the best known and popular diving site in Gran Canaria, if you want to enjoy it and the marine fauna that it has, do not hesitate to stay in one of our apartments near that beach following this link.

This area of the East Coast of Gran Canaria has acquired over time a well-deserved reputation for the great variety of fish and the prolific marine life that can be found in its waters, so much so that the Canary Government has edited different books on the area in question. In addition to the biological richness of the area we can also find a wide range of volcanic formations such as caves, tunnels, arches, crevices and passageways.

Due to the large extension of the Cabrón reserve we have different access points, which allows to perform up to almost a dozen different dives. In the marine life of this area we can find huge shoals of snorers, white fulas, or barracudas, we can also see banks of sargos, old, gueldes, pigeons, mackerels, sardines etc.

Even we should not rule out finding some native stripe, called mutts in the Canary Islands, or some seahorse, and why not, an angelote, very frequent in winter, where the water never drops from 17 degrees in the colder months.

Sardina del Norte y Puerto de las Nieves

Diving in Sardine and Snow Port are in the northwestern part of the island. Few are tourists who come to visit this diving area where there are various dives of no more than 25 m. On the rocks you can find numerous hedgehogs and typical species of the area, fulas, gueldes, old, octopuses, chocos, etc.

This is also a great place to find angels and little mutts. Diving these areas offers the possibility to visit numerous caves and underwater tunnels, but it is in autumn when you can enjoy the experience of diving with the devil manta-ray, whose sightings are very popular with divers.

If you do not want to miss the experience of swimming alongside these wonders of nature, I will leave here a link to one of our apartments located a few meters from the sardine beach, where you can enjoy its beach and its seabed by clicking  on this  link.

In the port of Las Nieves you will find the ferry terminal to Tenerife and from the beach you can access the sea to snorkel along the coast in calm waters. Parking near the beach is quite limited and there are no diving schools in the area. Getting to the area will take more than an hour’s drive from the southern area where most hotel accommodation is located.

However, we offer you the possibility to stay in one of our chalets  located in the center of Agaete, just 10 minutes from the Puerto de las Nieves with an ideal terrace for rest by clicking on this link.

The Cathedral

In the northeast of Gran Canaria, near the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, diving takes place mostly from boat, there we have some wrecks and the famous Cathedral. To enjoy this magnificent underwater structure and this dive in Gran Canaria, you can stay in this apartment located on Castrillo street 1km from the sports pier.

In the outskirts of Las Palmas and leaving its sports dock we can access the Cathedral, as long as the conditions are favorable. In the shallowest part we can find between 10 and 12 meters.

It is a volcanic formation of several caves connected with fantastic contrasts, the absence of life next to the harsh conditions makes the cathedral a historic diving spot. The cathedral is a dive for experts and is one of the best diving spots in Gran Canaria.

This dive requires planning as it has several routes through this mass of volcanic rock with many nooks and crannies. It must be accessed by boat and reaches a depth of between 30 and 40 meters making it more complex.
